What Is the Ring and Ball Apparatus Used For?
In the ring and ball test, a disc of bitumen held in a ring and loaded with a steel ball is heated in a liquid at a steady rate, and the temperature at which it sags a set distance is taken as its softening point. The filled rings and their ball guides sit on the plate, the 9.5 mm balls are centred on the bitumen, and the assembly is lowered into the beaker of water or glycerine; the operator heats the beaker, keeps the bath even with the hand stirrer and notes the thermometer reading as each ball touches the bottom. The standards listed are IS 1205 1985, IP 58/63 and ASTM D 36.
