Standard Penetrometer (code EL-BTLE-10439) is a manual dial penetrometer for measuring the penetration of bitumen with a needle, or of greases and similar materials with an optional cone. A head carrying the dial, plunger rod and needle slides on a vertical pillar over a base with levelling screws, the dial is graduated in 400 subdivisions of 1/10 mm, and a rack and pinion gives fine adjustment of the tip to the sample.

What Is the Standard Penetrometer Used For?
Penetration grading is one of the most widely used ways of classing paving bitumen by hardness, the result being the depth a loaded standard needle sinks into the sample at a fixed temperature in a fixed time, in tenths of a millimetre. The operator levels the base, sets the sample container under the head, lowers the needle with the rack and pinion until its tip just meets the surface, zeroes the dial and releases the plunger for the test time, then reads the dial and resets it with the clutch. Fitted with the cone instead, the same frame gives an empirical figure for greases and petroleum jelly. The standards listed are EN 1426, ASTM D5 and AASHTO T49.
