What Is the Reflux Extractor 4000 Gms Used For?
In reflux extraction the bitumen is washed out of a mix sample by hot solvent rather than spun out. The sample is weighed into the two cones lined with filter paper, solvent is placed in the bottom of the glass jar, and the jar stands on the hot plate over the wire gauze. Solvent vapour rises past the cones to the condenser, condenses and drips back through the sample, carrying dissolved binder down into the jar, and the cycle continues until the solvent draining from the cones is clear. Once extraction ends, the cleaned aggregate is dried and its mass compared with the original sample mass to give the binder content. The standards listed are ASTM D 2172 and AASHTO T 164.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of extractors required.
- Spare jar — whether a spare cylindrical glass jar is wanted.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the Reflux Extractor 4000 Gms put together?
A cylindrical glass jar supports two metal cones made of stainless steel cloth, and a metal condenser sits on top of the jar to return the solvent to the sample.
What is supplied with the extractor?
Each extractor comes with 100 filter papers, a wire gauze and a hot plate, so the solvent in the jar can be heated on the bench.
Can a replacement jar be ordered?
A spare cylindrical glass jar can be supplied at extra cost, in addition to the jar that forms part of the apparatus.
How does reflux extraction differ from centrifuge extraction?
Instead of spinning the sample, it washes the bitumen out with solvent that is repeatedly boiled, condensed and dripped back through the sample held in the cones.
Which standards does it refer to?
The standards listed are ASTM D 2172 and AASHTO T 164, both of which cover quantitative extraction of bitumen from paving mixtures.
