Centrifuge Extractor Hand Operated

Centrifuge Extractor Hand Operated

Product Code : EL-BTLE-10425

Centrifuge Extractor Hand Operated (code EL-BTLE-10425) is a manually driven centrifuge for determining and checking the bitumen percentage of a bituminous mix, in which a solvent dissolves the binder and centrifugal action removes it. A removable aluminium rotor bowl of 1500 gms capacity, with cap and tightening nut, sits on a vertical shaft turned at speed through enclosed gears by a handle, and a drain carries away the dissolved bitumen.

What Is the Centrifuge Extractor Hand Operated Used For?

Being turned by hand, this extractor needs no electrical supply, so it suits site laboratories as well as the main laboratory for checking the binder content of a mix. The operator weighs the mix into the aluminium bowl, adds solvent, tightens the cap and turns the handle; the gears spin the bowl fast enough to fling the bitumen-laden solvent out into the housing, from where it runs off through the drain. More solvent is fed in through the holes in the cap until it comes out clean, and the dried aggregate left in the bowl is weighed to give the bitumen percentage. The standards listed are ASTM D2172, AASHTO T-58 and T-164.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of hand operated extractors required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the hand operated centrifuge extractor used for?
It is used to determine and check the bitumen percentage in a bituminous mix, by dissolving the binder in solvent and separating it from the aggregate by centrifugal action.

How much mix does the bowl hold?
The removable aluminium rotor bowl has a capacity of 1500 gms and is closed with a cap and tightening nut before it is spun.

How is the bowl turned without a motor?
The bowl is mounted on a vertical shaft rising from a cast housing, and turning the handle drives the shaft at speed through gears enclosed in the cast body.

Where does the solvent go during the test?
Fresh solvent is introduced through the holes in the cap of the housing, and the dissolved bitumen thrown out of the spinning bowl gathers in the housing and leaves through the drain.

Which test standards does it relate to?
The standards listed are ASTM D2172, AASHTO T-58 and T-164, the references against which the bitumen percentage of the mix is determined.
