What Is the Centrifuge Extractor – Motorized Used For?

Centrifuge extraction is a common way of finding the binder content of a bituminous mix. A weighed portion of the mix goes into the bowl and is covered with solvent, a filter paper disc is fitted under the lid, and the bowl is spun so that the solvent carrying the dissolved bitumen is thrown out through the filter while the aggregate stays behind; washing and spinning are repeated until the solvent runs clear. The aggregate is then dried and weighed, and the loss in mass gives the bitumen content. For this motorized unit the standards listed are ASTM D2172, AASHTO T-58 and T-164.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of extractors required.
  • Filter paper discs — how many sets of 25 discs are wanted as the optional extra.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sample size does the motorized extractor take?
Its capacity is 1500 g of bituminous mix per extraction, placed in the bowl together with the solvent before the motor is started.

How is the rotor speed controlled?
A dimmerstat fitted to the unit varies the speed between 2,400 and 3,600 rpm, so the bowl can be brought up to speed gradually rather than started at full speed.

Are filter paper discs included?
Filter paper discs are an optional extra, offered in sets of 25; a disc holds back the fine material while the solvent and dissolved bitumen pass out of the bowl.

What electrical supply is needed?
The unit is electrically operated from a 230 V, 50 Hz, single phase A.C. supply, and its speed is set on the dimmerstat.

Which standards are given for this extractor?
The standards listed are ASTM D2172, AASHTO T-58 and T-164, and the unit is offered for bitumen extraction testing in the asphalt laboratory.
