Elastic Recovery Mould

Elastic Recovery Mould

Product Code : EL-BTLE-10429

Elastic Recovery Mould (code EL-BTLE-10429) is a set of three brass/gunmetal moulds used to form the bitumen briquette specimens for elastic recovery testing. Each mould is made up of two end clips (B and B') and two sides (A and A'), and when properly assembled it forms a briquette 75 ± 0.5 mm long, with its other dimensions held to ± 0.1 mm.

What Is the Elastic Recovery Mould Used For?

Elastic recovery is used mainly to assess polymer-modified bitumens: a briquette of the binder is stretched to a set elongation, the thread is cut, and the share of the stretched length that it draws back is reported as a percentage. To make the specimens, the sides and clips are assembled on a base plate, hot binder is poured in and, once cooled, trimmed level; the sides are then taken away so that only the clips hold the specimen in the testing machine. Holding each dimension to its tolerance keeps the cross-section the same from one specimen to the next. The standards listed are EN 13398, ASTM D113, D6084, AASHTO T51 and NFT66.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is in one Elastic Recovery Mould set?
One set contains three moulds made of brass/gunmetal. Each mould has two end pieces, B and B', which act as clips, and two side pieces, A and A'.

What size of briquette does the mould form?
Correctly assembled, it forms a briquette with a total length of 75 ± 0.5 mm; dimension A is 36.5 mm and B is 30.0 mm, each to ± 0.1 mm.

What are the narrower dimensions of the specimen?
Dimension C is 17.0 mm, while D and E are both 10.0 mm, each held to a tolerance of ± 0.1 mm so that the specimen section stays consistent.

What does an elastic recovery test show?
It shows how far a stretched and cut thread of bitumen draws back towards its original length, a property used mainly when judging binders modified with polymers.

Which standards is the mould listed under?
The standards listed are EN 13398, ASTM D113, D6084, AASHTO T51 and NFT66, which deal with elastic recovery and ductility testing of bitumen.
