What Is the Marshall Stability Test Apparatus Used For?
Specimens for the Marshall method are made by compacting hot asphalt or tar mixture in the steel moulds, with base plate and extension collar fitted and the mould held in the clamp on the pedestal, under repeated drops of the 4535 g hammer through 457 mm. Each specimen is then laid on its side in the breaking head, the frame loads it at 50.8 mm/min, and the highest load carried is taken as the stability while the dial gauge gives the flow. Laboratories and highway departments use these results to compare trial mixes and to check mixtures supplied to site. The standards listed are EN 12697-34, ASTM D1559, AASHTO T245-T2833, BS 598, NF P98-252-2 and DIN 1996.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Marshall Stability Test Apparatus measure?
It measures the resistance to plastic flow of cylindrical bituminous paving mixture specimens loaded on their lateral surface, giving the stability, while flow is read on the dial gauge of the breaking head.
Which mixtures can be tested on it?
It is intended for hot mixture made of asphalt or tar with aggregate up to 25.4 mm maximum size, compacted into cylindrical specimens in the steel moulds that come with the set.
What is included for making the specimens?
The set includes 3 steel cylindrical compaction moulds with 3 base plates and 3 extension collars, 2 compaction hammers, a manual compaction pedestal with mould clamp, and a pack of 100 non absorbent paper discs of 11 cm diameter.
How heavy is the compaction hammer, and how far does it fall?
Each hammer has a 4535 g sliding weight with a free fall of 457 mm, and two such hammers are provided with the apparatus for compacting the specimens in the moulds.
What electrical supply does the frame need?
The geared screw jack and motor drive run on a 230 V, 50 Hz, single phase A.C. supply, giving the crosshead its 50.8 mm/min rate of travel.
What details does an export enquiry need?
State the number of sets, the destination country with the port or city of delivery, the delivery terms wanted, for example FOB or CIF, any packing requirements, and the tender reference where the purchase is for a tender.
