What Is the Cut Back Bitumen Distillation Equipment Used For?
A cutback bitumen is a binder thinned with a volatile solvent so that it can be sprayed or mixed at lower temperatures, and distillation shows how much solvent it carries and how volatile that solvent is. A measured sample is heated in the 500 ml flask behind the shield, the vapour is condensed and collected in the 100 ml crow receiver, and the volumes distilled are noted as the thermometer reaches set temperatures. The residue left in the flask is then tested to check the base bitumen. The standards listed are ASTM D402 and AASHTO T78.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of distillation sets required.
- Thermometer — the ASTM 8C thermometer (-2 to +400 °C), as the set is supplied without one.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Cut Back Bitumen Distillation Equipment used for?
It is used for distillation tests on cutback bitumen, finding the share of volatile solvent in the binder and leaving a residue for further testing.
How is the flask heated?
An electric hot plate controlled by an energy regulator supplies the heat, with the heavy gauge shield, supported on its platform with chimney, around the flask.
Which glassware is included?
Glassware in the set is a 500 ml distillation flask and a 100 ml crow receiver, one of each, the receiver collecting the distillate.
Is a thermometer included?
The set is supplied without a thermometer. The thermometer specified for it is ASTM 8C, reading -2 to +400 °C with 1 °C subdivisions.
Which standards are listed?
The standards listed are ASTM D402 and AASHTO T78, both of which cover the distillation of cut-back asphaltic products.
