Mastic Asphalt Tester

Mastic Asphalt Tester

Product Code : EL-BTLE-10441

Mastic Asphalt Tester (code EL-BTLE-10441) is an apparatus for determining the hardness number of mastic asphalt for flooring. A 6.5 mm dia pin is loaded onto the specimen through a lever to give a 31.7 Kg weight, a 0.01 × 25 mm dial gauge records how far the pin penetrates, and the specimen sits in a two-tap water bath in an insulated cabinet, held at 35 ± 0.5 °C by an immersion heater and thermostat.

What Is the Mastic Asphalt Tester Used For?

Mastic asphalt laid as flooring has to be hard enough not to dent under furniture and foot traffic, yet not so hard that it cracks, so its hardness is checked on test specimens. The specimen is conditioned in the water bath at 35 ± 0.5 °C, the 6.5 mm pin is lowered onto its surface and the lever applies the load, and the dial gauge shows how far the pin sinks in over the test period. That penetration is reported as the hardness number. The standard listed for it is IS 1195.

  • Quantity — the number of testers required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Mastic Asphalt Tester measure?
It determines the hardness number of mastic asphalt for flooring, from the depth to which a loaded 6.5 mm dia pin penetrates the specimen.

What load is applied to the pin?
A lever loads the pin onto the specimen to give a 31.7 Kg weight, and the resulting penetration is read on a 0.01 × 25 mm dial gauge.

How is the test temperature controlled?
The water bath at the base of the insulated cabinet is heated by an immersion heater, and a thermostat holds it at 35 ± 0.5 °C; two taps are fitted to the bath.

Which standard is listed?
The standard listed for it is IS 1195, which covers bitumen mastic for flooring and the hardness number it must meet.
