What Is the Straight Edge Used For?
Surface regularity affects ride quality and drainage, so new and resurfaced pavements are checked for bumps and dips across the carriageway. The straight edge is laid across the road on its two end supports, which hold it at a fixed height above the surface; the operator then slides the incremented wedges under the beam at points along its length, and the wedge step that just fits shows how far the surface departs from a true line at that point. The beam is then moved along and the check repeated across the width being inspected.
