Travelling Beam Device

Travelling Beam Device

Product Code : EL-BTLE-10461

Travelling Beam Device (code EL-BTLE-10461) is a 3 m wheeled beam for detecting road surface irregularity on concrete or asphalt pavements. Rigid wheels at each end and a third wheel at mid-length let it register vertical departures of the surface from the line joining the end wheels, up to ± 25 mm, and a recording unit draws a graph of the deviations; the device weighs approximately 55 kg.

What Is the Travelling Beam Device Used For?

Where a fixed straight edge checks one position at a time, a rolling beam surveys a continuous line along the lane, which makes it suited to acceptance checks on newly laid concrete or asphalt. The device is pushed along the wheel path; the end wheels define a 3 m reference line, and the middle wheel rises and falls with each bump or hollow, so its movement relative to the beam is the deviation of the surface. The recording unit traces these deviations as a continuous graph, and the scale shows the size of each one, in 2 mm steps up to 10 mm and 5 mm steps beyond.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Travelling Beam Device detect irregularities?
Its beam runs on rigid wheels at each end and has a wheel at the middle, which follows any vertical deviation of the surface from the straight line between the end wheels.

What size of deviation can it record?
Vertical deviations up to a maximum of ± 25 mm are recorded; the scale reads in 2 mm steps as far as 10 mm and in 5 mm steps between 10 and 25 mm.

Can it be used on both concrete and asphalt?
Yes. It is intended for detecting road surface irregularity on either concrete or asphalt pavements, using the same 3 m beam.

How are the results recorded?
A recording unit is supplied with the device, producing a graph of the vertical deviations along the length of road that has been surveyed.

How heavy is it?
The device weighs approximately 55 kg, and its beam length of 3 m sets the base over which surface deviations are measured.
