Longitudinal Compressometer

Longitudinal Compressometer

Product Code : EL-CTLE-10304

Longitudinal Compressometer (code EL-CTLE-10304) is a frame-type instrument that clamps over a concrete cylinder to measure its longitudinal deformation under compressive load. Screws in its top and bottom rings clamp it firmly onto the cylinder, a 0.002 mm × 5 mm dial gauge on the upper ring bears through its tie onto an anvil whose screw sets the zero, and it comes in a wooden carrying case.

What Is the Longitudinal Compressometer Used For?

The modulus of elasticity of concrete, its stiffness under working loads, is found by measuring how much a cylinder shortens along its axis as compressive load rises. The compressometer is clamped to the cylinder with the ring screws before the specimen goes into the compression machine, the gauge is zeroed with the anvil screw, and dial readings are taken at set load steps. Plotting stress against the strain worked out from those readings gives the elastic modulus used in structural design. The standard listed for the compressometer is ASTM C 469.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the compressometer fixed to the cylinder?
It has a bottom ring and a top ring, each with tightening screws that clamp the frame firmly over the concrete cylinder before loading.

What dial gauge does the compressometer use?
The upper ring carries a dial gauge of 0.002 mm × 5 mm, and the tie of that gauge rests on an anvil.

How is the compressometer gauge set to zero?
The zero on the dial gauge is set by turning the anvil screw, which moves the anvil that the gauge tie bears on.

What is a longitudinal compressometer used to find?
It measures the shortening of a concrete cylinder under compressive load, from which the strain and so the modulus of elasticity of the concrete can be worked out.

How is the compressometer stored and carried?
The instrument is kept in a wooden carrying case, and the standard listed for it is ASTM C 469.
