What Is the Thermal Stability Test Apparatus Used For?

When PVC is heated it begins to break down and give off hydrogen chloride, and the thermal stability test measures how long a compound resists this at a set temperature, which shows how well it is stabilised for service as cable insulation. Prepared samples are placed in thermal tubes that sit in the holes of the heated aluminium block. The operator sets the test temperature on the PID controller, waits for the block to settle, inserts the tubes and times the test, while the solid block keeps all the tubes at the same temperature.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of units required.
  • Tubes — the thermal tube sizes the block holes must take.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature range is available?
It heats from ambient to 210.1 °C and can work continuously at that temperature, holding it to ±1 °C or better with a 1 °C digital setting.

How are the samples held during the test?
Samples go in thermal tubes that sit in holes in a solid round aluminium block, drilled as per IS, with provision for holes to suit different tubes.

What heats the block?
A strip type heater of 350 W heats the block, and ceramic blanket insulation in the double walled body keeps heat loss to a minimum.

What does the thermal stability test show?
It shows how long a PVC compound resists breaking down at a set temperature before it releases hydrogen chloride, an indication of how well the material is stabilised against heat.

Can the apparatus be carried?
A handle arrangement is fitted to the unit so that it can be lifted and carried while a test is in progress.

What supply does the unit need?
It runs on a single phase 220/230 V ±10%, 50 Hz supply with a continuous duty cycle, in a CRC powder coated mild steel housing.
