What Is the High Temp. Oil Bath Used For?
Oil is used in place of water when a bath has to work well above the boiling point of water. For oxidation stability work, samples of oil or grease are held at a set high temperature for a fixed period so that their resistance to oxidation can be assessed; for calibration, a thermometer or thermocouple is immersed beside a reference and their readings compared at several temperatures. The operator fills the stainless steel bath with oil, sets the temperature and lets the 1/20 HP stirrer circulate the oil so that the temperature is even before readings are taken.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of baths required.
- Interior finish — polished or hairline stainless steel 304 grade.
- Controller — whether the microprocessor based PID digital temperature controller cum indicator is wanted.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the highest working temperature?
The bath works from ambient temperature up to 250 °C, with a temperature stability of ±1 °C / 2 °C or better and digital setting and resolution of 1 °C.
Why is the bath argon welded?
The 304 grade stainless steel bath is argon welded so that it does not leak when the oil is held at high temperature during a test.
How is the oil kept at an even temperature?
Oil heaters cover the bath to spread the heat through it, and a 1/20 HP stirrer fitted on the back side circulates the oil continuously.
Can it be used to calibrate thermometers?
Yes. It is listed for calibrating thermocouples and thermometers, which are compared against a reference while immersed in the heated, stirred oil.
What is an oxidation stability test?
It shows how well an oil or grease resists reacting with oxygen when held hot for a period, since oxidation thickens lubricants and forms acids and deposits that shorten their service.
