What Are the Graduated Measuring Jars Used For?

On site, a graduated jar gives a quick check of how much silt a sand contains before it goes into concrete or mortar. A measured volume of sand is placed in the jar with water, shaken and left to stand; the silt settles as a layer on top of the sand, and the height of that layer, read on the graduations and compared with the sand below, gives the silt content by volume. In the laboratory the same jars measure out liquids by volume, with capacities from 5 ml up to 2000 ml.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of jars required.
  • Material — ordinary glass, polypropylene plastic, borosilicate glass or soda glass.
  • Capacity — the jar capacity needed, within the range of 5 ml to 2000 ml.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which materials can the jars be supplied in?
The jar can be chosen in ordinary glass, polypropylene plastic, borosilicate glass or soda glass, and the material is settled at the time of ordering, along with the capacity.

What capacities are available?
Capacities run from 5 ml at the smallest to 2000 ml at the largest, covering small liquid measurements as well as larger sand and silt samples.

How is the silt content of sand checked with a measuring jar?
Sand is shaken with water in the jar and left to settle. Silt forms a layer above the sand, and the thickness of that layer, read on the graduations and compared with the sand layer, gives the silt content by volume.

Can the jars be used for liquids as well?
Yes. Besides the silt and sand measurement at site, the jars are used to measure quantities of liquids by volume in the laboratory.

What information does an export enquiry need?
An export enquiry should list the jars by material and capacity with the number of each, and name the destination country and the port or city. Add the delivery terms, for example FOB or CIF, any packing needs and the tender reference where there is one.
