What Is the Flow Cup Viscometer Used For?
Flow cups give a quick viscosity check for paints, varnishes, inks and similar liquids. The cup is levelled with the bubble level, the orifice is closed with a finger and the cup is filled until the liquid overflows into the gutter, after which the glass plate is drawn across the top to leave a fixed volume. The orifice is then opened and the stopwatch run until the stream breaks, while the thermometer records the liquid temperature, because viscosity changes with temperature. The flow time is converted to kinematic viscosity, with the orifice size chosen so that the time falls within the working range.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of viscometers required.
- Orifice — the orifice diameter needed: 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 mm.
- Cup and orifice material — aluminium or brass cup, stainless steel or brass orifice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which orifice sizes are available?
Orifices are offered in 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm and 8 mm diameters, equal to 0.12, 0.16, 0.20, 0.24 and 0.31 in.
What flow times and viscosities does it cover?
Flow times are 25 to 150 or 30 to 100 seconds, and the viscosity ranges given are 7 to 42 and 600 to 2,000 cSt (mm²/s).
What comes with the viscometer?
It is supplied with a stopwatch, a glass plate, a bubble level and a thermometer with a liquid probe for checking the temperature of the fluid.
Why does the cup have an overflow gutter?
Excess fluid runs into the gutter when the cup is filled and struck off, so the cup holds the same volume each time and faulty measurements are prevented.
Why is the fluid temperature recorded?
The viscosity of most liquids falls as they warm up, so the temperature is noted with each flow time and results are compared at the same temperature.
What should an export order enquiry contain?
Include the number of viscometers and orifice sizes, the destination country with the port or city, FOB, CIF or other delivery terms, any packing instructions and a tender reference where one applies.
