What Is the Vacuum Pump Used For?
Water used in tests such as specific gravity determinations in a pyknometer must be free of dissolved and trapped air, otherwise air bubbles give false volume readings. The pump draws a vacuum over the water or the sample in its vessel until the air has been removed. Because water vapour drawn into the pump mixes with its oil and forms an emulsion that can damage it, an air drying unit filled with silica gel is placed in the line to take up the moisture.
