What Is the Tablet Hardness Tester Used For?

Tablet hardness, or breaking force, is the force needed to crush a tablet across its diameter; tablets that are too soft break during packing and handling, while very hard tablets may not disintegrate as intended. Each tablet is placed between the jaws, the instrument applies an increasing load until the tablet breaks, and the breaking force is shown on the digital display in newtons. The operator starts each test from the keypad and can work through a set of up to 25 tablets, which gives a sample for checking consistency from batch to batch.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of testers required.
  • Tablet size — the width, thickness and diameter of the tablets to be tested, within 25 mm, 10 mm and 45 mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What force range does it measure?
The hardness range is given as 5 to 500 N and the measuring range as 1 N to 300 N, with results shown on a digital display.

How many tablets can be tested in one run?
The tester takes a maximum of 25 tablets at one time, and it can measure the hardness strength of all types of tablets.

What tablet sizes fit the tester?
Tablets from 0 to 25 mm wide and 0 to 10 mm thick can be tested, and the diameter is given as 45 mm.

Why is tablet hardness tested?
A tablet must be strong enough to survive coating, packing and transport, but not so hard that it fails to break up after it is swallowed, so hardness is checked during production.

How is the tester operated?
It is microprocessor operated through a keypad, with readings shown on a digital display, and it is housed in a powder coated mild steel body.
