What Are the Gauging Trowels Used For?

Gauging means mixing a binder with water or other materials in set proportions, and the gauging trowel's rounded tip and V-shaped back let the user mix and turn a small amount of quick set plaster before it stiffens. For masonry, the brick trowel lays brick and block and can tamp or cut bricks, the smaller pointing trowel finishes joints and fills small cavities, and the margin trowel mixes thinset and spreads adhesive in tight spots. On fresh concrete, the magnesium hand float removes surface imperfections and compacts the surface, and the finishing trowel then smooths it once the concrete has begun to set.
