Link Polygon Apparatus
Product Code : EL-AMLE-10631
Link Polygon Apparatus (code EL-AMLE-10631) is a kit of magnetic parts used with the Work Panel to study forces pulling at different angles on one point or on two points. Up to five forces can be set at any angle using cords, rings, magnetic mounts, magnetic protractors, pulleys, weights and a spring balance, and an illustrated user guide with theory, experiments and typical results is supplied.

What Is the Link Polygon Apparatus Used For?
When several forces act on a body at rest they must balance, and drawn to scale as arrows placed nose to tail they close into a triangle or polygon. Students or teachers fix the magnetic mounts, pulleys and protractors to the Work Panel, hang masses on cords meeting at a ring and let the system settle; the angles are read on the magnetic protractors and the pull in one cord on the spring balance. The measured forces are then compared with values found by drawing, using Bow's Notation, first for forces through one point and then for forces acting at two points.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of kits required.
- Work Panel — whether the Work Panel the kit fits onto is also required.
Frequently Asked Questions
What else is needed to use the kit?
The kit is designed for use with the Work Panel; its magnetic parts are fitted to the panel to build each force experiment.
How many forces can be applied?
Up to five forces can be set at any angle, acting on a single point for concurrent force work or on two points for non-concurrent experiments.
What is included in the kit?
It contains cords, rings, magnetic mounts, magnetic protractors, pulleys, hooks, masses and weights and a spring balance, together with a fully illustrated user guide giving theory, experiments and typical results.
What is Bow's Notation?
Bow's Notation is a labelling system in which the spaces between the forces on a diagram are lettered, so that each force can be drawn in order on the force polygon. The kit introduces it with the drawing method.
What do students compare in the experiments?
They measure the forces at equilibrium and compare them with the theoretical values found from a triangle of forces or force polygon drawn for the same arrangement.
