Slotted Link Mechanism Apparatus

Slotted Link Mechanism Apparatus

Product Code : EL-AMLE-10637

Slotted Link Mechanism Apparatus (code EL-AMLE-10637) is a demonstration model used to generate and investigate pure harmonic reciprocating motion from smooth rotation. An anodised aluminium crank disc on ball bearings drives an anodised slider crank whose pin runs in a straight guide; crank radii of 25, 37.5 and 50 mm give output strokes of 50, 75 and 100 mm, read on a ruler, while a pointer shows the input angle.

What Is the Slotted Link Mechanism Apparatus Used For?

Pure harmonic reciprocating motion is motion whose displacement follows the sine of the crank angle exactly, unlike the slightly uneven stroke given by an ordinary crank and connecting rod. The student sets the crank pin at one of the three radii, turns the crank disc in steps read off by the pointer on the angle scale, and records the position of the guided pin on the ruler; the run is then repeated at the other radii. Plotting stroke against input angle shows the sine-shaped motion, and strokes of 50, 75 and 100 mm show that each is twice the crank radius.

Frequently Asked Questions

What crank radii and strokes are available?
The crank pin can be set at radii of 25 mm, 37.5 mm and 50 mm, giving output strokes of 50 mm, 75 mm and 100 mm respectively.

How is the input angle read?
A pointer on the anodised aluminium crank disc reads the input angle on the integrated angle measuring scale, while a ruler on the straight guide gives the output stroke.

What motion does the model produce?
Smooth rotary motion of the crank disc is converted into a purely harmonic reciprocating motion of the pin travelling in the straight guide.

How large and heavy is the model?
Overall, the model is 380 × 280 × 100 mm (l × w × h), with a weight of approximately 3 kg; it stands on plastic feet and has two metal handles.

What are the learning objectives?
Students study the conversion of smooth rotary motion into purely harmonic reciprocating motion, and the influence of crank length and input angle on the output stroke.

What is the crank disc made of?
The crank disc is anodised aluminium and runs on ball bearings mounted on a white plate; the slider crank attached to the crank pin is also anodised.
