Whitworth Quick Return Apparatus

Whitworth Quick Return Apparatus

Product Code : EL-AMLE-10643

Whitworth Quick Return Apparatus (code EL-AMLE-10643) is a bench-top demonstration of the Whitworth, or quick-return, mechanism, a revolving crank slider that gives a slow forward stroke and a fast return. Its drive disk, carrying the crank and coupling, works a driving rod and cylinder, crank angles appear on a graduated disc and on a base plate scale, and the stroke on a millimetre steel ruler; all axles run in ball bearings.

What Is the Whitworth Quick Return Apparatus Used For?

A quick-return mechanism is used where a machine works on its forward stroke and should lose as little time as possible coming back, the shaping machine being the classic example; the crank turns at a steady speed, but the working stroke takes up a larger part of each revolution than the return. With the unit on the bench, the student turns the drive disk in equal angle steps, reads each crank angle and the matching stroke position on the ruler, and plots stroke against angle. The curve shows the slow forward and fast backward movement, and the ratio of the angles taken by each stroke gives the time ratio.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Whitworth quick-return mechanism?
It is a revolving crank slider that produces a non-uniform stroke, with slow forward movement and fast backward movement, and is used in tools, packaging and transport machinery.

How are the angle and stroke measured?
The crank, a rotary element with a graduated disc, gives the angle, which is repeated on the base plate's own angle scale, while a millimetre steel ruler on the cylinder measures the stroke.

What materials is the unit made from?
The frame is anodised aluminium with painted steel panels, and the main metallic elements are stainless steel; all axles are fitted with ball bearings.

Which parts make up the mechanism?
It consists of the drive disk carrying crank and coupling, a driving rod and a cylinder, with a rigid connecting rod carrying a millimetre scale and two further rigid bars that transfer the motion.

Why is the return stroke faster?
The crank turns at constant speed, but the geometry of the mechanism means the forward stroke occupies a larger angle of crank rotation than the return, so the return is completed in less time.
