Fly Wheel Apparatus

Fly Wheel Apparatus

Product Code : EL-AMLE-10623

Fly Wheel Apparatus (code EL-AMLE-10623) is a self-contained, wall-mounted unit used to demonstrate how a flywheel stores rotational energy and to illustrate the second law of motion. Its 250 mm × 30 mm steel flywheel runs in ball bearings and has an engraved line on the periphery read against a pointer, and a set of weights, a load hanger and cord, a stop watch and an instruction manual for student and lecturer are supplied.

What Is the Fly Wheel Apparatus Used For?

A flywheel takes in energy and stores it as rotation when more energy is supplied than a machine needs, then gives it back when demand exceeds supply, which is why flywheels smooth the running of engines, presses and punching machines. In the experiment the cord carries the load hanger and weights; the student releases the load, times its fall with the stop watch while the pointer and engraved line are used to count the turns of the wheel, and from these readings works out the acceleration and the energy given to the wheel, relating them to the second law of motion.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of flywheel units required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is the flywheel?
The flywheel is made of steel and measures 250 mm × 30 mm, with an engraved line on its periphery that is read against the pointer of the wall mounting.

What accessories are supplied?
A set of weights, a load hanger with cord and a stop watch are supplied, together with an instruction manual written for both the student and the lecturer.

How is the unit mounted?
It is a self-contained wall-mounted unit. The mounting carries a pointer at the periphery of the wheel, and the wheel itself runs in ball bearings.

What does the apparatus demonstrate?
It shows the working principle of a flywheel and its practical significance in industry, together with energy storage in a rotating body and the second law of motion.

How large and heavy is the unit?
Excluding the set of weights, the self-contained unit measures 215 × 280 × 250 mm overall and weighs approximately 19 kg.

Why are flywheels used in machines?
A flywheel stores rotational energy when the supply is greater than the demand and releases it when the demand is greater, which evens out speed changes during each working cycle.
