Gear Trainer Demonstrator
Product Code : EL-AMLE-10627
Gear Trainer Demonstrator (code EL-AMLE-10627) is a model gearbox representing a typical simple sliding mesh box with three forward ratios and reverse, used for classroom demonstrations and laboratory work. Gear wheels of different sizes are engaged as required, and pulleys fitted with protractors on the input and output shafts allow velocity and torque ratios to be found and verified.

What Is the Gear Trainer Demonstrator Used For?
Road vehicles use variable-ratio gearboxes so that engine power can be applied effectively as road conditions change, and the sliding mesh box, still found on heavy commercial vehicles, shows the basic layout from which most later gearboxes were developed. Students select each forward ratio and reverse in turn, rotate the input pulley through a measured angle on its protractor and read the turn of the output pulley to find the velocity ratio, then use the same pulleys to verify the torque ratio. Coupled with the Overdrive and Differential, the gearbox forms a simple transmission for whole-system demonstrations.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of gearbox demonstrators required.
- Transmission models — whether the Overdrive and Differential are needed to make up a simple transmission system.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many gears does the gearbox have?
It represents a simple sliding mesh box with three forward ratios and a reverse, using gear wheels of different sizes that are engaged as required.
How are the gear ratios measured?
Pulleys fitted with protractors are attached to the input and output shafts, so students can determine and verify the velocity ratio and torque ratio for each gear engaged.
Can it be connected to other transmission models?
Yes. The gearbox can be coupled to the Overdrive and Differential so that together they represent a simple transmission system.
Why study a sliding mesh gearbox?
Although seldom found on modern cars, the sliding mesh box is still used on heavy commercial vehicles and shows the basic layout from which most modern gearboxes have been developed.
