Oldham Coupling

Oldham Coupling

Product Code : EL-AMLE-10632

Oldham Coupling (code EL-AMLE-10632) is a hand-operated model used to demonstrate how torque is transferred between two parallel shafts whose axes are displaced, and the relative angular motion between them. Three discs make up the coupling, with a middle disc joined to the input and output discs by tongue-and-groove connections set at right angles; the model is mounted on a base, turned by a crank handle and measures about 300 × 300 × 200 mm.

What Is the Oldham Coupling Used For?

Shafts that run parallel but slightly out of line cannot be joined by a rigid coupling, and an Oldham coupling takes up this offset with a sliding middle disc. Turning the crank handle, the student watches the middle disc slide in its tongue-and-groove connections as the input and output discs rotate, and observes the relative angular motion between the two shafts through a full turn. Such couplings are much more compact than an arrangement of two universal joints doing the same job, and springs are often added to them to reduce backlash.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Oldham Coupling model demonstrate?
It shows the relative angular motion, in degrees, between two shafts whose axes are parallel but displaced, and how torque passes from one to the other through three discs.

How is the coupling constructed?
One disc is coupled to the input, one to the output, and a middle disc is joined to both by tongue and groove, with the tongue and groove on one face perpendicular to those on the other.

How is the model operated?
It is operated manually through a crank handle, and the whole equipment is laid out on a base so that it stands on a bench for demonstration.

What are the size and weight of the model?
The model measures approximately 300 × 300 × 200 mm (L × W × H) and weighs 5 kg, so it can be carried to a classroom by hand.

Why use an Oldham coupling instead of two universal joints?
For shafts that are parallel but displaced, an Oldham coupler does the same job as two universal joints in much less space. Springs are often fitted to such couplings to reduce backlash.
