Youngs Modulus Apparatus
Product Code : EL-AMLE-10646
Youngs Modulus Apparatus (code EL-AMLE-10646) is a wire extension apparatus used to find the relationship between the load applied to a wire and the resulting extension, from which Young's modulus is worked out. It has an engraved brass scale with a vernier reading to 0.1 mm and a scale plate carrying a 0 to 30 mm scale with a movable 0.1 mm vernier, plus a ceiling clamp with wood screws and a tension weight of approx. 1.3 kg.

What Is the Youngs Modulus Apparatus Used For?
Young's modulus is the ratio of tensile stress to tensile strain in a material loaded within its elastic limit, and for a wire it is found from the load, the extension, the original length and the cross-sectional area. The ceiling clamp is screwed to an overhead beam or door frame, the wires are clamped in place and the 1.3 kg tension weight is hung to keep them taut. Loading masses are then added to the hook in steps and the extension is read on the vernier to 0.1 mm at each step, and the graph of load against extension gives the value.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Youngs Modulus Apparatus measure?
It measures the extension of a wire under increasing load, giving the relationship between load and extension from which the Young's modulus of the wire material is worked out.
How finely can the extension be read?
Both the engraved brass scale and the 0 to 30 mm scale plate carry verniers that read to 0.1 mm, the vernier on the scale plate being movable.
Where are the wires hung from?
A ceiling clamp holds the upper ends of the wires, and a pair of large wood screws is provided to attach it to a convenient overhead beam or door frame.
What weight is included?
A tension weight of approximately 1.3 kg is included; it hangs on its hook to keep the wire taut, while separate loading masses provide the test loads.
What is Young's modulus?
Young's modulus is the ratio of tensile stress to tensile strain for a material within its elastic limit. It indicates how stiff the material is when it is stretched.
