Cam Mechanism

Cam Mechanism

Product Code : EL-AMLE-10617

Cam Mechanism (code EL-AMLE-10617) is a demonstration unit showing how a cam turns a uniform rotating drive motion into a non-uniform output motion, with or without latching. It is made up of a cam, an engaging member and a frame; the engaging member can be a roller plunger, a flat plunger or a cam follower, and cams of different shapes can be fitted.

What Is the Cam Mechanism Used For?

Cams are used wherever a machine part has to move through a set pattern while a shaft turns steadily, the opening and closing of engine valves being a familiar case. On this unit the student turns the cam, reads the angle of rotation on the angular scale and measures the travel of the engaging member at each angle, building up a curve of stroke against cam angle. Repeating the test with cams of other shapes, or with the roller plunger, flat plunger or cam follower, shows how the cam profile and the type of follower decide the output motion.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of cam units required.
  • Cams — the cam shapes to be supplied with the unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What motion does the Cam Mechanism demonstrate?
It shows a uniform rotating drive motion being converted into a non-uniform drive motion, with or without latching, along a path set by the geometry of the cam.

Which follower types can be used?
The engaging member pressed by the cam profile can be a roller plunger, a flat plunger or a cam follower, so the motion given by each type can be compared.

How are stroke and angle read?
The stroke is found by measuring the travel of the engaging member, and an angular scale indicates the corresponding angle of rotation of the cam.

Can different cam profiles be tried?
Yes. Cams are available in different shapes, and changing the cam changes the movement path, since that path is defined by the geometry of the cam.
