Second Law of Motion Apparatus
Product Code : EL-AMLE-10635
Second Law of Motion Apparatus (code EL-AMLE-10635) is a spring-driven demonstration unit used to show Newton's Second Law of Motion with two steel balls launched from a spring gun. Built on a solid metal casting with the whole mechanism visible, it has a two-tension spring gun, a blue-painted base of 10 × 2.5 in and a 10 mm rod for clamping horizontally to a support stand or table clamp; one of the two balls is drilled.

What Is the Second Law of Motion Apparatus Used For?
The demonstration rests on the fact that the downward acceleration of a falling body is set by gravity alone, so bodies leaving the same height reach the floor together whatever their sideways speed. The teacher clamps the rod horizontally to a support stand or table clamp, loads the two steel balls and releases the spring gun at one of its two tensions. The class watches and listens as both balls strike the floor at the same moment, and repeating the launch at the other tension shows that a change in horizontal speed does not change the time of fall.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which law of motion is shown, and how?
It demonstrates Newton's Second Law of Motion: two steel balls are launched by the same spring-driven mechanism and both hit the floor at the same time.
How is it mounted for a demonstration?
A 10 mm (0.5 in) rod lets the unit be clamped horizontally to a support stand or to a table clamp at the height chosen for the demonstration.
What is supplied with it?
The set is complete with two steel balls, one of which is drilled, for use with the spring gun of the apparatus.
Can the launch force be changed?
Yes. The spring gun has two tensions, so the demonstration can be repeated at a second launch strength to show that the balls still land together.
What is the apparatus made of?
It is made of solid metal around a substantial metal casting, with the entire mechanism left visible and a base painted blue measuring 10 × 2.5 in.
