What Is the Worm and Wheel Apparatus Used For?
A worm and wheel gives a large speed reduction in a single stage, which is why it is found in hoists and other lifting gear, but sliding between the worm and the wheel teeth means that a fair part of the input work is lost. In the experiment a load hangs from a string on the 12 cm drum and effort weights are hung from the 12 cm pulley on the worm spindle; the student increases the effort until the load rises steadily and notes both. The ratio of work output to work input, found from the loads and the distances moved, gives the efficiency.
