Universal Joint Apparatus

Universal Joint Apparatus

Product Code : EL-AMLE-10640

Universal Joint Apparatus (code EL-AMLE-10640) is a benchtop model used to demonstrate how angular motion passes through articulated joint shafts, the gimbal error this causes and how the error can be avoided. Two couplings made from standard industrial universal joint parts are linked by a split intermediate shaft, each deflection angle is set individually, drive is by hand wheel, and transparent plastic angle scales sit on both shaft ends.

What Is the Universal Joint Apparatus Used For?

Joint shafts fitted with universal joints carry a drive between shafts set at an angle, as in vehicle transmissions and machine tool drives, yet each joint turns its output unevenly. On this model the student sets a deflection angle on each joint, turns the hand wheel and reads the angle of the drive shaft and of the power take-off shaft on their transparent scales at intervals through a revolution. The difference between the two readings is the gimbal error, and trying different joint settings shows how the arrangement of the couplings decides whether the error is cancelled or added to.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of universal joint models required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Universal Joint Apparatus used to show?
It shows the transmission of angular motion to joint shafts, the gimbal error that results, and how this error can be rectified by the way the couplings are arranged.

How is the model driven?
Drive is applied by turning a hand wheel on the drive side, and the shaft ends at both sides run in ball bearings.

How is the angle difference read?
Transparent plastic angle scales on the drive side and the power take-off side allow the angle of each shaft to be read, and the difference between them gives the gimbal error.

Can each joint be set to a different angle?
Yes. The deflection angle of each of the two joints can be set individually and read on its scale, so matched and unmatched arrangements can be compared.

What are the dimensions of the model?
At 360 × 280 × 185 mm (l × w × h), the model is built on a solid, painted base plate using standard industrial universal joint parts.
