Hookes Coupling Apparatus

Hookes Coupling Apparatus

Product Code : EL-AMLE-10629

Hookes Coupling Apparatus (code EL-AMLE-10629) is an experimental unit for studying the gimbal error of a universal joint shaft, in which two universal joints are linked by an intermediate shaft. The arrangement of the joints and the deflection angle are set with two rotary disks on the base plate; the input angle is set and read at the drive joint, the output angle at the driven joint, and two handles are fitted for carrying.

What Is the Hookes Coupling Apparatus Used For?

A Hooke's coupling, or universal joint, links two shafts whose axes meet at an angle, as in vehicle propeller shafts, but a single joint passes on the rotation unevenly, so the output speeds up and slows down during each turn. This uneven transmission is the gimbal error, and pairing two joints on an intermediate shaft can cancel it. Students set a deflection angle with the rotary disks, turn the drive side through known input angles and read the matching output angle at the driven joint; the difference between the two readings gives the gimbal error for each arrangement tried.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is gimbal error?
When a single universal joint connects two non-aligned shafts, torque and speed are passed on non-uniformly. This non-uniform transmission is called the gimbal error, and it shows as a difference between input and output angles.

How does the apparatus remedy the gimbal error?
It uses two universal joints connected by an intermediate shaft, the combination known as a cardan shaft or universal joint shaft, which is the arrangement used to remedy the error.

How are the angles set and read?
The deflection angle and joint arrangement are set with two rotary disks on the base plate. The input angle is read at the drive joint and the output rotation angle at the driven joint.

Is Hooke's coupling the same as a universal joint?
Yes. A universal joint is also known as a Hooke's coupling; it joins two shafts that are not in line and transfers torque and rotational motion between them.

How is the experiment set out?
All the elements are mounted on one base plate, and its two handles let the complete experiment be lifted onto the laboratory bench and moved away again after use.
