Vibration of Spiral Spring Apparatus

Vibration of Spiral Spring Apparatus

Product Code : EL-AMLE-10641

Vibration of Spiral Spring Apparatus (code EL-AMLE-10641) is a wall-mounted unit used to investigate the vibrations of a spiral spring and rotating mass system and to find its time period and frequency. The spiral spring has a stiffness of c=238 Nmm, a 10 × 1 mm cross-section and an effective length of approx. 800 mm, and is attached to an axis on ball bearings carrying 2 levers with 0.5 kg sliding weights and a 0 to 360° angle scale.

What Is the Vibration of Spiral Spring Apparatus Used For?

A spiral spring and the mass it carries form a torsional oscillator: twisting the spring stores energy, and when released the mass swings back and forth about the axis at a natural frequency set by the spring stiffness and the moment of inertia of the rotating parts. The student sets the sliding weights at a chosen arm radius, turns the levers to an initial deflection read on the angle scale and releases them, timing a number of oscillations to give the period and frequency. Moving the weights between 36 and 150 mm changes the moment of inertia, so the period can be compared with the value calculated from the spring stiffness.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of spiral spring vibration units required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the spiral spring's specifications?
The spring has a stiffness of c=238 Nmm, a cross-section of 10 × 1 mm, an effective length of approx. 800 mm, and inside and outside radii of 10 mm and 50 mm.

How is the deflection read?
An integrated angle measuring scale mounted on the axis reads from 0 to 360° with a resolution of 1°, giving both the initial deflection and the swing of the levers.

What masses are fitted to the levers?
There are 2 stainless steel levers, 8 mm in diameter and 154 mm long, carrying stainless steel sliding weights of 0.5 kg mass and 50 mm diameter.

Can the moment of inertia of the rotating mass be changed?
Yes. The sliding weights can be positioned so that the arm radius of the rotating mass lies anywhere from 36 mm to 150 mm, which alters the period of vibration.

How is the apparatus mounted?
It is fixed by a wall mounting plate of anodised aluminium, with a base plate of 200 × 250 mm (w × h) and the axis running on ball bearings.

What is a spiral spring?
A spiral spring is formed by a metallic strip wound around a rod, so that turning the rod coils or uncoils the strip and produces a restoring torque on the axis.
