Friction Slide Apparatus
Product Code : EL-AMLE-10625
Friction Slide Apparatus (code EL-AMLE-10625) is a compact bench top unit used to determine the coefficient of friction between pairs of materials on an inclined plane. A ground steel plane pivots on an aluminium base with non-slip feet and a central pillar and locks at any angle between ±45° on a semi-circular protractor scale, and two reversible slider trays give aluminium and steel or nylon and brass surfaces.

What Is the Friction Slide Apparatus Used For?
Friction between two surfaces is described by the coefficient of friction, the ratio of the force needed to slide one over the other to the force pressing them together. With the steel plane locked at a chosen angle on the protractor scale, the student attaches a slider tray to the hanger cord, which passes over the pulley, and adds weights until the tray just begins to move up the slope. The hanging load, the tray weight and the plane angle give the friction force and the coefficient of friction, and turning the tray over or adding weight to it lets other material pairs and normal loads be compared.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of friction slide units required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which material pairs can be tested?
Two composite slider trays are supplied, one of aluminium and steel and the other of nylon and brass. Turning a tray over presents its other material to the ground steel plane.
Over what angles can the plane be set?
The ground steel plane pivots on the base and can be locked at any angle between ±45°, with the setting shown on a semi-circular protractor scale.
How is the friction force found?
Weights are added to the hanger until the tray just begins to slide up the sloping plane. The cord runs over a pulley and bearing, which keeps friction in the pulling arrangement low.
Can the apparatus be used for other experiments?
It can also serve as an exercise in the equilibrium of forces, and extra weight can be placed in the slider trays to widen the scope of the experiment.
What comes with the unit?
Each apparatus is delivered with a weights set and hanger, plus an instruction manual intended for lecturers as well as students.
What details should an export enquiry for this apparatus include?
State the quantity required, the destination country and port or city, the delivery terms wanted, such as FOB or CIF, any packing requirements and the tender reference if the purchase is under a tender.
