Compound Pendulum
Product Code : EL-AMLE-10620
Compound Pendulum (code EL-AMLE-10620) is a laboratory pendulum used to study the time period and frequency of a compound pendulum. It consists of a metallic rod carrying metallic balls fitted at different locations along it, and the rod can be pivoted at any desired point, so the pendulum can be swung from a range of pivot positions.

What Is the Compound Pendulum Used For?
A compound pendulum is a rigid body swinging about a pivot, and unlike a simple pendulum its mass is spread along its length, so its period depends on how far the pivot is from the centre of gravity and on the way the mass is distributed. The student pivots the metallic rod at a chosen point, sets it swinging through a small angle, times a number of oscillations and works out the time period and frequency. Repeating the timing with the pivot at other points along the rod shows how the period changes with pivot position.

Frequently Asked Questions
What can be studied with the Compound Pendulum?
It is used to study the time period of a compound pendulum and its frequency, by timing the oscillations of the rod about a chosen pivot point.
How is the pendulum built?
A metallic rod forms the pendulum, and metallic balls are fitted to it at different locations, so its mass is spread along the rod rather than gathered at one end.
Can the pivot point be changed?
Yes. The rod can be pivoted at any desired point, which allows the period to be measured for several pivot positions along the same pendulum.
How does a compound pendulum differ from a simple pendulum?
A simple pendulum is treated as a small mass on a light cord, while a compound pendulum is a rigid body with distributed mass, so its period depends on the pivot position and the mass distribution.
