Bending Moment Apparatus
Product Code : EL-AMLE-10615
Bending Moment Apparatus (code EL-AMLE-10615) is a beam apparatus used to determine the bending moment and shear force at the hinged section of a beam under different loading conditions. Its teak wood beam of 1 m span, made in a long and a short section joined by a hinge, rests on supports and carries separate bending moment and shear force arrangements, each worked with a spring balance and adjusting screw. A weight set with loading hangers, a spirit level and a technical manual are supplied.

What Is the Bending Moment Apparatus Used For?
In a strength of materials or structures laboratory the apparatus shows how the internal forces in a beam change as loads are moved along its span. Students hang weights from the loading hangers at chosen positions, turn the adjusting screw until the spirit level shows the beam back in its original position, and read the spring balance; from that reading and the fixed distance at which the balance is mounted they calculate the bending moment, while the second attachment gives the shear force at the hinge. Repeating this for a series of load positions gives the values needed to plot influence line diagrams for bending moment and shear force.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Bending Moment Apparatus measure?
It is used to find the bending moment and the shear force at the hinge section of the beam for different loading conditions, and the readings are used to draw influence line diagrams for both quantities.
How long is the beam and what is it made of?
The beam has a 1 m span and is supplied with supports. It is made of teak wood in a long and a short section, the two being connected by a hinge.
How is the bending moment found for a given load position?
A spring balance fitted with an adjusting screw is mounted at a fixed distance. Its reading, taken with the beam restored to its original position, allows the bending moment to be calculated for any load position.
What is the spirit level used for?
The spirit level is used when bringing the loaded beam back to its original position, so that every balance reading is taken with the beam in the same position.
What is an influence line diagram?
An influence line diagram shows how the bending moment or shear force at one chosen section varies as a load moves across the span. Here it is drawn for the hinge section from readings at several load positions.
What is supplied with the apparatus?
The unit comes with the 1 m span beam and its supports, the bending moment and shear force arrangements, a spirit level, a weight set with loading hangers and a technical manual.
