Geneva Mechanism

Geneva Mechanism

Product Code : EL-AMLE-10628

Geneva Mechanism (code EL-AMLE-10628) is a demonstration mechanism used to show how intermittent rotary motion is produced from a uniform input speed. Its driven member, the star wheel, has evenly spaced slots into which the roller of the driving crank slides, turning the star wheel through one step and then leaving it at rest until the roller comes round again.

What Is the Geneva Mechanism Used For?

Intermittent motion of this kind is needed where a part must move one step, stop for an operation and then move on, as in indexing tables and the film advance of cine projectors. The student turns the driving crank at a steady speed and watches the roller enter a slot and carry the star wheel round, then leave the slot so that the star wheel stays still while the crank completes its turn. Marking the star wheel positions shows that each turn of the crank advances it by one slot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of motion does the Geneva Mechanism give?
It turns a uniform input speed into intermittent rotary motion: the driven star wheel moves through a step while the roller is engaged and stays at rest between steps.

How does the star wheel work?
The star wheel is the driven member. It has evenly spaced slots, and the roller of the driving crank slides into each slot in turn to rotate it.

When is the star wheel stationary?
Once the pin leaves a slot, the star wheel has been indexed and remains stationary until the pin of the driving crank comes back round to the next slot.

Where are Geneva mechanisms used?
They are commonly used wherever intermittent rotary motion is needed from a steadily turning input, for example in indexing tables and film projectors.
