Rotational Moment of Inertia Apparatus
Product Code : EL-AMLE-10634
Rotational Moment of Inertia Apparatus (code EL-AMLE-10634) is a three-string pendulum apparatus used to determine the moment of inertia of a rigid body. A photoelectric sensor and a time-counting device measure the torsional oscillation period of the hanging plate, and the set-up is used to compare two objects of equal mass but different mass distribution and to verify the parallel axis theorem.

What Is the Rotational Moment of Inertia Apparatus Used For?
A rigid body's moment of inertia measures its resistance to angular acceleration and depends on how its mass is distributed about the axis of rotation, so two bodies of equal mass can have quite different values. The student places a body on the hanging plate, gives the plate a small twist and lets the photoelectric sensor and time counter record the period of torsional oscillation, from which the moment of inertia is calculated. Repeating the measurement with the two equal-mass objects, and with a body moved away from the central axis, shows the effect of mass distribution and verifies the parallel axis theorem.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of moment of inertia sets required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which method does the apparatus use?
It uses the three-string pendulum method: a plate hung on three strings is set into torsional oscillation, and the moment of inertia is found from the measured period.
How is the oscillation period timed?
A photoelectric sensor works with a time-counting device to measure the period of the torsional oscillations of the hanging plate as it turns back and forth.
Which experiments can be carried out?
Students can measure moment of inertia by the three-string pendulum method, compare two objects of the same mass but different mass distribution, and verify the parallel axis theorem.
What does the parallel axis theorem state?
It states that the moment of inertia about any axis equals the moment of inertia about a parallel axis through the centre of mass plus the mass multiplied by the square of the distance between the axes.
Why do two objects of the same mass give different results?
Moment of inertia depends on mass distribution and on the position of the axis, so an object with its mass further from the axis has a larger moment of inertia than a compact one of equal mass.
