Fluid Statics and Manometry
Product Code : EL-FMLE-10661
Fluid Statics and Manometry (code EL-FMLE-10661) is a panel-mounted apparatus for studying liquids at rest and the use of manometers to measure pressure, level and head. It carries a 100 mm diameter, 575 mm high vertical tank and 460 mm manometer tubes in four forms (a U tube, two parallel tubes, a variable-section tube and a tube that pivots from 0 to 90°), together with a Vernier hook and point gauge, a piezometric tube, a manual air pump and a purge valve.

What Is the Fluid Statics and Manometry Used For?
Manometers measure pressure by balancing it against a column of liquid, which makes them the starting point for most pressure measurement in fluid mechanics. Students fill the tank and tubes, confirm that the free surface settles at the same level whatever the tube shape, measure levels with the hook and point gauge, and then use the U tube, inverted U tube and pivoting inclined tube to read differential pressure and head. Changing the manometer liquid shows how density alters sensitivity, the manual air pump pressurises the air over the liquid, and letting the liquid move shows the friction losses that separate statics from flow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which manometer tubes are provided?
There is one U shape vertical tube, two parallel vertical tubes, one vertical tube with a variable section and one tube on a pivot that inclines from 0 to 90°, the vertical tubes being 460 mm long.
How is the liquid level measured?
Levels are read with a Vernier hook and point gauge or against a scale, and a piezometric tube is used to measure the pressure in the liquid.
Can it measure pressure differences in a gas as well as a liquid?
Yes. A U tube manometer measures pressure differences in a gas (air over liquid), and an inverted pressurised U tube measures pressure differences in a liquid.
How is manometer sensitivity changed?
The sensitivity of the U tube manometer changes when liquids of different densities are used, and the pivoting tube can be set at different inclinations to act as an inclined manometer.
What size is the vertical tank?
The vertical tank has a diameter of 100 mm and a height of 575 mm, and it is mounted on an aluminium/MS structure with painted steel panels.
What does the free surface demonstration show?
It shows that the level of a free surface is the same whatever the size or shape of the tube, a basic principle of liquids at rest.
