Orifice and Venturi Meter Demonstration

Orifice and Venturi Meter Demonstration

Product Code : EL-FMLE-10670

Orifice and Venturi Meter Demonstration (code EL-FMLE-10670) is a Hydraulics Bench unit for finding the discharge coefficient (Cd) of a Venturi meter and of an orifice plate, mounted in series with a variable area meter so that all three can be read at one flow. An 8-tube manometer board covers 0 to 500 mm of water column and the flow meter 2 to 30 l/min; the Venturi has a 20 mm throat in a 32 mm pipe, and the orifice plate sits in a 35 mm pipe.

What Is the Orifice and Venturi Meter Demonstration Used For?

The discharge coefficient corrects the theoretical flow calculated from a meter's pressure difference to the flow that actually passes, and it is lower for an orifice plate than for a Venturi because the jet through a sharp-edged plate contracts and loses more energy. Students adjust the flow-control valve, note the variable area meter and the eight manometer readings, and measure the true flow with the bench volumetric tank. Dividing actual by theoretical flow at several rates gives Cd for each device, shows the pressure recovery after the Venturi throat and shows the error in flow readings taken with the orifice plate.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of demonstration units required.
  • Software — state if the optional educational software should be included.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Cd factor and how is it found here?
Cd is the ratio of actual to theoretical flow through a meter. It is found for the Venturi and the orifice plate by comparing their pressure readings with the flow measured in the bench volumetric tank.

What range does the manometer board cover?
The board has 8 tubes reading 0 to 500 mm of water column, linked to pressure tappings for reading the head lost across each of the three meters.

What size are the Venturi and the orifice plate?
The Venturi throat is 20 mm in a 32 mm upstream pipe, with a 21° downstream and 14° upstream taper. The orifice plate sits in a 35 mm upstream pipe with a 19 mm downstream orifice diameter.

What flow range does the variable area meter read?
The flow meter in series with the Venturi and orifice plate reads from 2 to 30 l/min, giving a direct reading to compare with the two differential pressure devices.

Is software available?
Educational software can be supplied as an option. The unit itself connects to the Hydraulics Bench by a quick-release fitting and has a built-in quick coupling system.

How large is the unit?
It measures 800 × 600 × 600 mm (L × W × H) and is built on an anodized aluminium structure with a painted steel panel.
