Demonstration Pelton Turbine
Product Code : EL-FMLE-10656
Demonstration Pelton Turbine (code EL-FMLE-10656) is a model of an impulse turbine used to show the design and function of a Pelton turbine and to determine its torque, power and efficiency. A needle nozzle with a 10 mm jet drives a 14-blade Pelton wheel of 132 mm external diameter inside a housing with a transparent front panel, and a band brake read on spring balances loads it; rated output is 5 W at 500 min-1 with approx. 30 L/min at H = 2 m.

What Is the Demonstration Pelton Turbine Used For?
In a Pelton turbine the whole pressure drop takes place in the nozzle, so the wheel turns in air and is driven only by the momentum of the free jet as its blades turn the water back on itself. Students set the needle position to fix the jet, tighten the band brake in stages and record the spring balance readings, the inlet pressure on the manometer and the wheel speed from the non-contact sensor. Torque, power and efficiency follow from these readings, and plotting them against speed for several needle settings gives the characteristic curves of the turbine.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does a Pelton turbine differ from a reaction turbine?
It works on the impulse principle: the nozzle alone turns the pressure of the supply into jet velocity, and the impulse of the jet passes to the wheel as the blades turn it through approximately 180°.
How is the flow through the nozzle changed?
Moving the needle in or out alters the open area of the nozzle, and with it the flow reaching the wheel. The needle nozzle gives a jet diameter of 10 mm.
What are the Pelton wheel dimensions?
The Pelton wheel carries 14 blades, each 33,5 mm wide, and has an external diameter of 132 mm.
How are torque and inlet pressure measured?
Torque comes from the force on the band brake, read on spring balances with a 2 × 0 to 10 N range, while a manometer reading 0 to 1 bar shows the pressure at the turbine inlet.
What output does the model give?
The turbine is rated at 5 W at 500 min-1, with a flow of approx. 30 L/min and a head of 2 m.
How is the rotational speed measured?
Rotational speed is taken with a non-contact speed sensor, which is required for this measurement, using the marking provided on the brake drum.
