Impact of a Jet Apparatus

Impact of a Jet Apparatus

Product Code : EL-FMLE-10666

Impact of a Jet Apparatus (code EL-FMLE-10666) is used to measure the force a water jet exerts on a target and to compare it with the force predicted by momentum theory. An 8 mm nozzle inside a clear acrylic cylinder, fed from the Hydraulics Bench, strikes interchangeable 40 mm targets (a 90° flat surface, a 120° curved surface and a 180° hemisphere), and the force is balanced with 5, 10, 50 and 100 g masses on a spring-counterbalanced weight pan.

What Is the Impact of a Jet Apparatus Used For?

A jet striking a surface changes direction, and the rate at which its momentum changes equals the force on the surface, so a target that turns the water further back receives a larger force for the same flow. Students fit one of the three targets, zero the level gauge, open the bench supply and add masses to the weight pan until its mark returns to the gauge, while reading the flow on the bench flow meter. Repeating this for several flow rates and for the flat, 120° and hemispherical targets gives measured forces to plot against the values predicted from jet velocity and deflection angle.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of jet impact apparatus required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which target surfaces are supplied?
Three 40 mm impact surfaces are included: a 90° flat surface, a 120° curved surface and a 180° hemispherical surface, so the effect of deflection angle can be compared.

How is the jet force measured?
Calibrated weights are added to the weight pan until a mark on the pan lines up with a level gauge that was zeroed beforehand; a compression spring offsets the dead weight of the moving parts.

What jet size does the nozzle give?
The discharge nozzle gives an 8 mm jet, aligned with the target inside a clear acrylic cylinder so the impact can be watched.

How is the flow rate found?
The apparatus sits on the top surface of the fluid mechanics bench, and the flow rate is read on that bench's flow meter through the fast connectors.

Does water splash out during tests?
Holes in the base of the tank drain the water away as it leaves the target, which avoids splashing around the apparatus.
