Series Parallel Pumps

Series Parallel Pumps

Product Code : EL-FMLE-10680

Series Parallel Pumps (code EL-FMLE-10680) are a pair of centrifugal pumps sharing a closed water circuit, for investigating how pumps behave when run singly, in series and in parallel. Both pumps draw 370 W; one has a frequency converter for 0 to 3300 min-1 and the other runs at a fixed approx. 2800 min-1, each giving up to 40 L/min and 10 m head, with valves to switch the arrangement, transparent impeller housings, a transparent tank and software-linked pressure and flow sensors.

What Are the Series Parallel Pumps Used For?

Pumping systems often use two pumps together: connected in series their heads add, which suits high-resistance systems, while in parallel their flows add, which suits systems that need more volume at modest head. Students first run the variable-speed pump alone, closing the outlet valve in steps to record its head against flow, then add the fixed-speed pump and switch the valves to series and to parallel operation. The software logs inlet pressure, outlet pressure and flow at each point, so the combined curves can be compared with the single-pump curve and with the sum of heads or flows expected for each arrangement.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of series-parallel pump units required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to head and flow in series and parallel operation?
In series operation the heads of the two pumps are added, and in parallel operation their flow rates are added; the unit measures both cases as well as single-pump operation.

How are the pumps driven?
Each centrifugal pump has its own drive motor drawing 370 W. One runs at a variable 0 to 3300 min-1 through a frequency converter, the other at a fixed approx. 2800 min-1.

How is the operating mode changed?
Valves switch between single-pump, series and parallel operation, and a further valve at the pump outlet adjusts the flow resistance of the system.

Which sensors and ranges are provided?
Sensors measure pressure at the pump inlets (±1 bar) and outlets (2 × 0 to 5 bar) and the flow rate (10 to 140 L/min), all read through the integrated instrumentation and software.

Can the impellers be observed?
Yes. The impellers of both pumps are mounted in transparent housings and can be watched during operation, and the water tank is also transparent.
