Hydrostatic Pressure Apparatus

Hydrostatic Pressure Apparatus

Product Code : EL-FMLE-10665

Hydrostatic Pressure Apparatus (code EL-FMLE-10665) is used to determine the static thrust that water exerts on a submerged flat surface and to compare the measured size and position of that force with simple theory. A quadrant on a pivoted balance arm sits over a 5.5 ltr acrylic tank, with a tray and adjustable counterbalance on the arm, 285 mm between the masses and the support point, and a set of 4 × 100, 1 × 50, 5 × 10 and 1 × 5 gr masses.

What Is the Hydrostatic Pressure Apparatus Used For?

Water presses on a submerged surface with a force that grows with depth, and that force acts at the centre of pressure, which lies below the centroid of the surface; gates and tank walls are designed on this basis. Students level the tank with the screwed feet and spirit level, balance the empty arm with the counterbalance, then fill the tank in stages and add masses to the tray to bring the arm back to balance, reading the water level on the scale each time. The moment of the masses about the pivot gives the measured thrust and centre of pressure for partial and total submersion, at 90° and at other angles, for comparison with theory.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the apparatus measure?
It measures the static thrust a fluid exerts on a submerged flat rectangular surface and its point of action, the centre of pressure, so that both can be compared with simple theory.

How is the hydrostatic force balanced?
The force on the quadrant face creates a moment about the supporting axis, which is balanced by placing masses on the tray of the swinging arm once the adjustable counter balance has been set.

Which masses are included?
The masses supplied are four of 100 gr, one of 50 gr, five of 10 gr and one of 5 gr, used on the tray to balance the moment of the water force.

Can partly and fully submerged cases be tested?
Yes. The centre of pressure and resultant force are found with the quadrant partially and totally submerged, both at 90° and at angles other than 90°.

What are the key dimensions of the quadrant set-up?
The masses hang 285 mm from the support point, the support point is 100 mm high on the quadrant, the section area is 0.007 m² and the total submerged depth is 160 mm.

How is the tank levelled?
The acrylic tank has screwed adjustable feet, and a circular spirit level on its base shows when it is level. A drainage valve empties the 5.5 ltr tank after use.
