Pitot Tube Apparatus

Pitot Tube Apparatus

Product Code : EL-FMLE-10676

Pitot Tube Apparatus (code EL-FMLE-10676) is used to study how a Pitot static tube works and to measure the velocity profile across a pipe, showing that fluid velocity varies with the square root of the difference between total and static head. A Pitot static tube with a 2.5 mm head traverses a transparent pipe of 32 mm bore and approx. 430 mm length, its tip position read on a scale, and hoses link it to a 500 mm pressurised water manometer.

What Is the Pitot Tube Apparatus Used For?

A Pitot static tube senses total head at its tip and static head at side holes, and the difference between them is the velocity head, from which the local speed of the flow is calculated. Students set a flow from the bench, traverse the tube across the pipe in steps, read the tip position on the scale and the differential head on the manometer at each point, and plot the resulting velocity profile. Integrating the profile gives a flow rate to compare with the bench measurement, which yields the Cd factor and the measurement error of the Pitot tube as an instrument.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of Pitot tube apparatus required.
  • Water supply — whether a Hydraulics Bench or the Basic Hydraulic Feed System will supply the unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is measured with the Pitot static tube?
It measures the differential head between total and static pressure at each position across the pipe, which gives the dynamic head profile and so the velocity profile of the flow.

How is the tube positioned in the pipe?
The Pitot static tube can be moved across the whole cross-section of the transparent pipe, and the position of its measuring tip relative to the pipe wall is read on a scale.

What are the pipe and tube dimensions?
The transparent pipe has a 32 mm internal diameter and is approx. 430 mm long, and the Pitot static tube has a head diameter of 2.5 mm.

How does velocity relate to the manometer reading?
Fluid velocity is proportional to the square root of the head difference between total head and static head, which the 500 mm pressurised water manometer displays.

Can the Pitot tube itself be evaluated?
Yes. The experiments include determining the Cd factor of the Pitot tube and the error in flow measurements made with it as a measuring instrument.

Which water supplies can be used?
Supply can be taken from the Hydraulics Bench or the Basic Hydraulic Feed System, connected through hoses and the built-in quick coupling system.
