Flow Meter Demonstration Unit

Flow Meter Demonstration Unit

Product Code : EL-FMLE-10658

Flow Meter Demonstration Unit (code EL-FMLE-10658) is a unit used on a Hydraulics Bench to compare three ways of measuring flow: a Venturi meter, a variable area meter and an orifice plate, fitted with a flow-control valve. The transparent plastic meters are laid out with their pipework on a metal sheet, with pressure tappings read on an 8-tube, 0-400 mm manometer board; the Venturi throat is 15 mm in a 31.75 mm pipe, the orifice plate is 20 mm and the variable area meter covers 2-20 l/min.

What Is the Flow Meter Demonstration Unit Used For?

Venturi meters and orifice plates infer flow from the pressure drop created by a restriction, while a variable area meter indicates flow directly on its scale, and each type costs a different amount of head. With the unit connected to the bench, students set a flow with the control valve, read the variable area meter and all eight manometer tubes, then time a volume in the bench's measuring tank to find the actual flow. Setting the results side by side calibrates each meter, shows the pressure profile along the Venturi and shows which device loses the most head.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which flow meters can be compared?
A Venturi meter, a variable area meter and an orifice plate are fitted together with a flow-control valve, so their readings can be compared directly at the same flow.

How is each meter calibrated?
Flow through the unit is collected in the volumetric measuring tank of the Hydraulics Bench, and the measured volume over a timed period is set against each meter's reading.

What are the Venturi dimensions?
The Venturi has a 15 mm throat in a 31.75 mm upstream pipe, with a 21° inclusive upstream taper and a 14° inclusive downstream taper.

What does the manometer board read?
It has 8 tubes with a 0-400 mm range, connected to tappings that give the head loss across each meter and the pressure curve along the Venturi.

What are the variable area meter range and orifice size?
The variable area meter reads from 2 to 20 l/min, while the orifice plate has a diameter of 20 mm for comparison with the Venturi.

Why are the meters made of transparent plastic?
The transparent plastic lets the function of each measuring device be seen while water flows through it, alongside the pressure readings on the manometer board.
