Tilting Flume

Tilting Flume

Product Code : EL-FMLE-10682

Tilting Flume (code EL-FMLE-10682) is a small open channel flume used with a Hydraulics Bench to study open channel flow, from Manning's formula and flow over weirs to sub- and super-critical flow and the hydraulic jump. Its 76 mm wide, 250 mm high working section has clear acrylic sides and comes in 2.5 m or 5.0 m lengths, the bed slope is set from -1% to +3% with a calibrated screw jack, and a Venturi, weirs and two vernier level gauges are included.

What Is the Tilting Flume Used For?

Open channel flow, as in rivers, canals and drains, is driven by gravity along a sloping bed, and the depth that results depends on the slope, the roughness and the structures in the channel. Students set the bed slope with the screw jack, set the downstream level with the overshot weir, and use the vernier gauges and a Pitot-static tube positioned on the longitudinal scale to measure depths and velocities. Fitting the weirs, Venturi or undershot weir lets them relate head to discharge, check Manning's formula, and produce sub-critical and super-critical flow and a hydraulic jump.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of flumes required.
  • Working section length — 2.5 m or 5.0 m.
  • Flow meter — whether the optional flow meter for direct flow measurement is to be fitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which lengths are available?
The flume is offered with a 2.5 m or a 5.0 m working section, both 76 mm wide and 250 mm high with clear acrylic sides.

How is the channel slope adjusted?
The framework is tilted by a calibrated screw jack, and the jacking system sets the slope of the channel bed anywhere between -1% and +3%.

What models come with the flume?
It includes a Venturi, sharp-crested and broad-crested weirs, an adjustable undershot weir, a crump weir and 2 vernier level gauges, and other models are available as accessories.

How is smooth flow obtained at the inlet?
The PVC inlet tank has a stilling arrangement that diffuses the water before it enters the channel, which gives smooth, uniform flow in the working section.

How is the flow rate measured?
Flow can be measured with a Pitot-static tube positioned along the longitudinal scale, and an optional flow meter can be fitted for direct flow measurement.

Which open channel topics can be taught?
Topics include Manning's formula, flow over weirs, level control with syphon spillways, flow control with a sluice gate, sub- and super-critical flow, wave characteristics and the hydraulic jump.
