What Is the Surface Plate Used For?

Every height, flatness or parallelism check made with a height gauge, dial indicator or square needs a flat datum, and the surface plate provides it. The work piece and the measuring instruments stand on the scraped top, and all readings are taken from that surface; in layout work the plate also carries the part while lines are scribed at set heights. Cast iron plates are used for spotting, tool making, inspection of parts, checking the accuracy of other surfaces and many gauging and marking-out operations. The Rexine cover goes back on after use to protect the top, and the standard listed for it is IS-2285-2003.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of surface plates required.
  • Plate size — the length and width needed; plates up to 630 × 630 mm have mild steel handles, larger plates have cored lifting holes.
