Temperature Measurement Trainer
Product Code : EL-MAILE-10812
Temperature Measurement Trainer (code EL-MAILE-10812) is a teaching kit used to study the working principle of the thermocouple, RTD and thermistor by measuring the temperature of water heated up to 100 °C. A small portable electric kettle provides the heat, the J type (Fe-K) thermocouple, PT-100 RTD and 5 Kohm negative-coefficient thermistor are housed in 6 mm diameter stainless steel tubes, and a 3½ digit LED indicator reads in degrees centigrade, checked against a glass thermometer reading up to 110 °C.

What Is the Temperature Measurement Trainer Used For?
The three sensors work in different ways: a thermocouple produces a small voltage that grows with the temperature difference between its junctions, an RTD's platinum element increases in resistance as it warms, and a negative-coefficient thermistor loses resistance sharply as temperature rises. Students heat water in the kettle, place the probes in it alongside the glass thermometer and read each sensor on the indicator as the water warms towards boiling. Comparing the readings shows how each transducer responds, and the test points on the front-panel schematic let the signal from each sensor be measured directly.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of trainers required.
- Power supply — 230 V, 1 phase, for 50 Hz or 60 Hz mains.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which temperature sensors are included?
Three sensors are included: a Fe-K (J type) thermocouple, a PT-100 RTD and a 5 Kohm thermistor with a negative temperature coefficient, each housed in a 6 mm diameter stainless steel tube.
What is used as the heat source?
A small portable electric kettle heats water up to boiling, giving a source temperature of 100 °C for the sensors to measure.
How can the sensor readings be checked?
A glass thermometer reading up to 110 °C measures the source temperature, so each sensor's reading on the digital indicator can be compared with it.
What type of display does the indicator have?
It has a 3½ digit LED display of 200 mV FSD and shows the temperature in degrees centigrade.
What is the difference between an RTD and a thermistor?
Both change resistance with temperature. A PT-100 RTD rises steadily in resistance as it warms, while a negative-coefficient thermistor's resistance falls, and by a much larger amount for each degree.
