Wing Compass
Product Code : EL-MAILE-10828
Wing Compass (code EL-MAILE-10828) is an 8 inch (200 mm) divider caliper used in metalworking to mark out locations and scribe arcs and circles, and to measure or step off distances between two points on work or on a map. Its legs are round, with bearing surfaces large enough to prevent side deflection, and it has a flexible bow spring, a hardened fulcrum stud, a solid nut and a centrally located adjustment.

What Is the Wing Compass Used For?
In marking out, a divider is used much as a drawing compass is used on paper, but its sharpened points scratch a fine line on metal or wood. The worker places one point in the dimple left by a centre or prick punch and swings the other leg round to scribe an arc or circle on the work surface. To transfer a size, the points are set to the two ends of a distance and the opening is then measured on a rule, or stepped along a line to divide it into equal parts; on a map, the opening is compared with the map's scale.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size is the Wing Compass?
It is an 8 inch (200 mm) divider caliper, used for marking circles and arcs on metal and wood.
How is it used to scribe a circle?
One leg is set in the dimple made by a centre or prick punch and the other leg is pivoted round so that its sharpened point scribes an arc or circle on the work piece surface.
How does it measure a distance?
The two points are brought to the two ends of the distance, and the opening is then read on a separate ruler or compared with the scale drawn on a map.
What keeps the legs steady in use?
The bearing surfaces of the round legs are large enough to prevent side deflection, and the adjustment is centrally located in the legs to give smooth action against the bow spring.
What is the difference between a compass and a divider?
A compass is a drawing instrument for circles and arcs, while a divider has two points and is used for dividing lines and stepping off distances.
