What Is the Le Chatelier Flask Used For?
Specific gravity compares the density of a cement or lime with that of water, and the value is needed in other calculations, such as fineness by air permeability. The flask is filled to the lower graduated zone with a liquid that does not react with the powder, and the level is noted. A weighed quantity of the sample is then added a little at a time, the flask is turned gently to free trapped air, and the new level is read in the upper zone. The rise in level is the volume displaced, and the mass divided by that volume gives the density and so the specific gravity.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Le Chatelier Flask measure?
It is used to find the specific gravity of hydraulic cement and lime, worked out from the volume of liquid displaced by a weighed quantity of the sample.
What is the capacity of the flask and how is its neck marked?
The flask has a capacity of 250 ml. The neck carries two graduated zones, from 0 to 1 ml and from 18 to 24 ml, both divided in 0.1 ml steps.
Why does the neck have two graduated zones?
The lower zone is used to read the liquid level before the sample goes in, and the upper zone reads the level after it has been added, so the difference gives the volume of the sample.
To what accuracy are the graduations made?
The graduations are made to an accuracy of 0.05 ml, which matters because the specific gravity is calculated from a fairly small change in liquid level.
